Madison St., Chicago, IL 60602 To Whom it may concern, My name is Martha Davalos and I am a senior at Social Justice High School in Chicago. Recently I was asked to choose an issue that I am passionate about to research and take action on to change for the better. I chose to research the topic of suicide. I chose this because I lost a close friend due to suicide. I am concerned with this issue because I want to help others so they won't take “the easy way out” in life and hope to find out if organizations are able to go talk to students and give them information of different services and to let them know that they are not alone. I found out that there is a number, 1-800-273-TALK (8255) , that is able to be contacted 24/7 and this information will help those who need the help by getting them in contact with local organizations. One suggestion I have is to go to schools and talk to students, sometimes they are too afraid to go seek for help . An example of this is to send a group of experts to go talk to students and give them information about where they can go for help. This would improve the high numbers of suicides that occur in teenagers who are afraid to look for help. Another example of a solution is to create after school programs. These after school programs will guide those students to do the right thing and learn how to defeat those negative thoughts, and kopw that they are important. These examples really will cause a positive impact and will help out students find the help they need , and please consider my research found at http://fireprojectsuicide.weebly.com/ Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you or a representative of your company. Sincerely, Martha Davalos, Social Justice Senior |

4134 W 24 Place June 2, 2016 National Suicide Prevention Lifetime Phone: 1-800-273-8255 To whom it may concern, My name is Stephanie Esparza, I am a current senior at Greater Lawndale High School for Social Justice . For the past several months my classmates and I were asked to choose and research an issue that raised the most sincere of our interest. As I began to scan the list of crisis that the city of Chicago faces. Suicide among teens stood out to me the most. This is due previous incidents a couple of are students faced. Through this project I hope to raise more awareness to the topic. I am concerned about the amount of attention this issue is give. I also hope to be a resource to those who are currently facing difficult times. I also hope that through this project people become more informed and consider alternatives. There are many resources out there that are willing to help. Reaching out to organizations such as the Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC) can be a great way to receive help. I am aware that sometimes seeking help from organizations, counselors or even friends can be challenging. That is why I suggest schools to survey student once every couple months to see where they stand mentally. I also advice one on one conversation with teachers and student can help boost confidence in the student. Creating more extracurricular activities would also help to prevent student from being alone at home or to simply interact with other student to distract from problems they might be facing. I am a big adherent that these simple ways can be a start to a greater solution to suicide among teenagers. Thank you for you time. I look forward to hearing back on what you think about my proposal regarding more activities within the CPS districts area. Respectfully, Stephanie Esparza |

Recently I was asked to choose an issue that I am passionate about to research and take action on to change for the better. I chose to research the topic of suicide. I chose this because a family member tried to commit suicide. I am concerned with the other people out there that think of committing suicide and hope to find out if there is a way to help them. I found that even if it looks like a person is doing fine deep inside you never know what they are going through and if they have suicidal thoughts. This information will help everyone who reads this to not underestimate someone. One suggestion I have is to reach out to local organizations. An example of this is sprc . This would improve the number of suicides that occur . Another example of a solution is have a conversation with one in need. For example in some communities this has caused great impact. Finally, when this takes place in our community , it will cause a positive impact.
