The historical background of suicide goes back to the beginning of time; it goes back to mythologies and legends of great civilizations. According to an online article it states that “There was a Mayan goddess named Ixtab who protected those who had died by suicide.” This proves that suicide goes back to the ancient great civilizations of the Mayans (A.D 250- 2600 B.C) because they had a goddess who protected those who would commit suicide. Also, it states that “Suicide was present in many cultures before any contact with the conquering of the Europeans”, meaning that suicide had been exposed to these people way before the Europeans conquered. As shown before it was done by the Mayans and the “Maoris of New Zealand were known to have had high tolerance toward suicide.” They would jump off a famed cliff and in 1843 suicided would occur almost every day with these people. Suicide has always been seen as the easiest way out of problems, it has been occurring since the earliest of times. It was done because they were trying to avoid being subjected to something they didn’t want to do.
Suicide was influenced by the economic, social, political, and cultural climate of the earlier time periods by religion, financial issues, abuse, rape, etc. Many of those factors still tie back to today. Many of those who commit suicide usually feel like they have no way out due to certain issues that have to do economically and emotionally. For example in an online article it states that, “The men who committed suicide were mostly in their early twenties and were trying to avoid making war; the women were stressed by the high number of male victims and by being forced to participate in cannibalism.” Cannibalism meaning “the act or practice of humans eating the flesh or internal organs of other human beings.” Those factors were influencing people to commit suicide around that time period.
